The Six-Second CV Audit

English & Bahasa Indonesia

A recruiter once told me she spends about six seconds on a first pass. Six seconds to decide if a CV gets a real read or gets set aside. I used to think that sounded unfair. Now I think it's just honest about how attention actually works when someone has two hundred CVs and one afternoon, and once I stopped taking it personally, it became one of the most useful pieces of information anyone ever gave me about job hunting.

Seorang recruiter pernah bilang, dia cuma butuh sekitar enam detik buat first pass. Enam detik buat mutusin apakah sebuah CV bakal dibaca beneran atau disisihkan. Dulu saya pikir itu nggak adil. Sekarang saya pikir itu cuma jujur soal gimana perhatian orang beneran bekerja kalau dia punya dua ratus CV dan cuma satu sore, dan begitu saya berhenti menganggapnya soal pribadi, itu jadi salah satu informasi paling berguna yang pernah diberikan siapa pun ke saya soal cari kerja.

What a recruiter actually sees firstYang beneran dilihat recruiter pertama kali

Not your objective statement. Not your list of skills. The eye goes to your most recent title, the company name next to it, and whatever sits directly under that first bullet point. If that first bullet is a duty instead of a result, the six seconds are already gone before the rest of the page gets a chance. I've watched this happen in real time, sitting next to a recruiter scrolling through a stack, and it's genuinely faster than you'd expect, a glance, not a read.

Bukan objective statement kamu.

The audit I now run on every CVAudit yang sekarang selalu saya lakukan ke setiap CV

Cover the rest of the page with your hand and read only the first line under your most recent role. Does it say what changed because of you, in a number or a concrete outcome, or does it just describe what you were assigned to do. If it's the second one, that line gets rewritten before anything else on the page does. I run this same test on every CV that comes across my desk now, including my own, every few months, because the standard I hold others to should apply to me too.

"Recruiters aren't skimming because they don't care. They're skimming because caring about two hundred CVs equally is not a real option."

Three things that survive the six secondsTiga hal yang lolos dari enam detik

A first bullet that leads with an outcome, not a task. A layout where the most recent, most relevant role is impossible to miss, not buried under formatting. And white space, because a page that looks dense at a glance gets skipped at a glance too, before a single word is read. Of these three, white space is the one people underestimate the most, a page that looks calm gets read calmly, and a page that looks like a wall of text gets treated like one.

The six seconds aren't the whole story. They're just the door. Everything after that is up to the rest of the page, but only if it gets that far, and I genuinely enjoy helping people get theirs there, because watching someone's CV finally get read the way their actual work deserves never gets old.
